Pale in the distance stood fast-fading Avalon, Perched on the lonely and sundering sea There the waves reached out, and there the mist gathered, And soon as I saw, it was taken from me. But I will make you stay, somehow I will find a way Nevermore slip away, evermore remain For as long as I carry your name. I watched the sun dip below the green fields And the flowers all sleeping in bright Tir na nOg Even the stars will fall, someday the clarion Call of the night will come, finding them gone. But I will make you stay, somehow I will find a way Nevermore slip away, evermore remain, For as long as I carry your name. All love is fleeting, the white wings are beating To carry the last of its promise from me All life is changing, and memory is fading, But time cannot steal what is already free. And I will keep you here with me I have found a way Nevermore slip away, evermore remain For as long as I carry your name.

Enfolded in the shadows of the sea Ten thousand years and more where dreams in darkness sleep And every shadow there a secret keeps Ten thousand years and more beyond all memory I call on the waves and the ghosts of the water To be still as the world at the waking of time And the moon shine a path for your sons and your daughters Through the valleys and hills of the sea let them walk in the light By silver ship and star my soul was borne Ten thousand years to stand upon this lonely shore But should I sing above the ocean's roar Then hearing she will rise and lead me home once more So I summon the sky and the spirits of seabirds To flash in the mirror that brightens the strand And their wings on the wind to find passages leeward Make the dark into dawn and a hero of old from a man I call on the waves and the ghosts of the water To be still as the world at the waking of time And the moon shine a path for your sons and your daughters Through the valleys and hills of the sea let them walk in the light Enfolded in the shadows of the sea Ten thousand years and more where dreams in darkness sleep And every shadow there a secret keeps Ten thousand years and more beyond all memory

under the wave-roof - we run in rough water - fathom the deep ways - last of our kind glide with the currents - swiftly and slowly - shadows in motion - suspended in time sun-sleekened silver - bask in the warm sand - hold fast together - the fin-footed race long before striders - strode on the shoreline - swam we by seaway - home to this place

Uncharted 03:50
We dragged a boat down to the shore one morning in the fall the sky was blue with promises, and we had heard the call of far-off lands that filled our sails with warm and welcome wind our compass was unfailing and our courage had no end At night upon the open deck, we sang without a care two invincible believers in the voyage that we shared I watched the constellations spinning silent in the sky we knew the stars by heart and which were best to travel by And on a happy ship of fools, what watches need be kept? the bells hung cold and silent and we drifted as we slept til in the dawn, the fickle sky had shaken out her hair the world turned grey and angry, and no shelter anywhere The night returned, and only then, we’d start to understand the stars had turned to strangers and we could not find the land take the charts and calculations, sacrifice them to the sea there is no map to help us here, wherever here might be Together in an ocean both uncharted and unknown and still at night our hands reach out to hold what’s left of home as we search the far horizon and remember, faintly, when our compass was unfailing and our courage had no end But you always were a mariner, and I have always been A daughter of the waves, and we will find our way again Though the storm has drowned the moonlight, and the tide has drowned the bar I will make my heart a compass if your love will be the star For you always were a mariner and I have always been A daughter of the waves, and we will find our way again

Seaborne 05:33
In the beginning, my maker made me with a keen eye for perfection A pleasing figure, a smooth face and a crystalline reflection I was beautiful - but the years have not been kind A broken vessel - out of hand is out of mind Now I am seaborne, I am time worn A bit of glass beneath a century of waves And so I gleam forth from this cold shore Until the day a pair of searching hands Find something they can save And so I drifted - sometimes a lonely sailor looked to me for answers But found no message - I was a bottle on the sea, a hollow dancer I was beautiful, but the years have made me small A broken vessel can't help anyone at all One day I shattered on a stone that would not yield to my desire To turn so stony - to be a rock like him, though I was forged in fire I was beautiful, but so much was washed away A broken vessel - just a fragment now remains I am seaborne, I am time worn A bit of glass beneath a century of waves And so I gleam forth from this cold shore Until the day a pair of searching hands Find something they can save A beach in winter - a lonely child with muddy feet and bright eyes Comes seeking treasure, and finds a gleaming bit of sea-glass in the pale tide I am beautiful, though the years have worn me down This broken vessel is a diamond to a king without a crown I am seaborne, I am time worn A bit of glass beneath a century of waves And so I gleamed forth from this cold shore Until the day a pair of searching hands Found something they could save

Who can measure the height where a heart finds its wings? Skip a stone on the sea, who can say what it brings? Tell the stars what you wish, and who knows what they’ll do? Once I followed a star, and it brought me to you. Over an ocean and under the stars That sing out together from ages apart Through the dark night there, my hand reached for yours Over an ocean as vast as the stars. Who can measure the depth of a heart full of dreams? Skip a stone on the sea, who can say what it brings? Take a chance on a dream, and who knows what you’ll do? Once I followed a dream, and it brought me to you. Over an ocean, I saw all my dreams That shone on a shoreline too distant to reach But you came to dwell in the spaces between Over an ocean as deep as my dreams. Who can measure the miles that have carried us here, Brought together and borne over oceans and years? Who knows how many times I have loved you before? Once for each of the stars in their heaven, and more. Over an ocean of all that has been Through nights without number, and days without end We will stand looking back at forever, and then My heart will find you My heart will find you, again and again.

Voices 03:17
When I worry I have nothing new to say I go and ask the ocean with her everchanging song and she says oh, my daughter-- do it anyway. I have listened just a while I have sung so very long But when you sing with me it’s something I have never heard before the ringing of the rocks around the waves upon the shore There is a voice that wakes the water in your veins And brings to life all breathing things It shifts and shapes, it moves and makes, it bends and breaks And takes its place here Forevermore When I fear that I am drifting in the dark I look out to the stars, alone and shining distantly And they say oh, my darling, hold on to your spark what you touch is changed forever though you may not always see But from the highest places, all your hidden colors show The fire in your eyes will set the universe aglow There is a brightness that surrounds you like the dawn And it goes on and on and on And love creates the light that takes a human shape Its ways to wander Itself to know.

about

Nothing has ever captivated me like water does. I have written about oceans since I learned to write. They are familiar and mysterious, treacherous and lifegiving. Wild with a beauty that commands respect. These motifs appear so often in my work out of intimate acquaintance and lifelong love, but there is something deeper to the marriages of poets with the sea. Water changes shape to fill each space and vessel, taking seemingly limitless forms. Each body contains multitudes, some that may be understood, and others only guessed at. I think that every heart is its own ocean.

Here in these songs are cool mist and cold currents, desolate shorelines and craggy echoes that only the sea herself may hear. There are seal-chants and spellsongs, young longings in old tongues, the promise of reunion kept beyond a far horizon. Half-hidden in the sand there are treasures worn by time, restored by love.

Here are shells along the beach and a wind to sound them. If you hold one to your ear, I hope it sings sweetly for you.
