Black dog don't come growlin
When she slinks in from outside
That black dog don't come growlin
When she slinks in from outside
Don't come round to cause no trouble
Just got tired of bein tied
Bein tied
Day and night
To the shadow workhouse
Come join me by my fire
Tell me have you any word
Come and eat beside my fire
But tell me have you any word
About my sister or my brother
Won't you tell me what you've heard?
What have you heard
Of the fire they stirred
At the shadow workhouse?
She said you start with dust and darkness
That is the story of the sun
You must gather dust and darkness
If you would live to see the sun
Then she stood up at the window
With her head cocked like a gun
Just like a gun
At a man who runs
From the shadow workhouse
She said this world is made of bones and blood and tears and mud and grit and grime
Stone and flood and fear and love all covered up in grit and grime
And you can never clean it up
But you can learn to make it rhyme
Well you can make your rhymes
While you do your time
In the shadow workhouse
In the shadow workhouse
In the shadow workhouse
I could listen to Lauren sing forever. Her writing is vivid and sensitive, sweetly and painfully human--never apologizing for sharp corners and rough edges. The beauty of her spirit shines through. Summer Russell

I am very pleased to hear new music from 3 of my friends from John McCutcheon’s songwriting camp.
The album has lovely songs and beautiful harmonies.
Looking forward to more soon. whoppenjans

This is a wonderful recording. For a live recording the quality is amazing. The vocal balance with voice and piano is perfect. I very much enjoyed the stories between the songs, they enriched the meaning of the songs. Anyone who is interested in mythology and a wonderful story teller who does so with music, this is for you Kathleen SLOAN
