about

I joined the Society for Creative Anachronism when I was sixteen, and all I wanted to do was put on armor and fight, but I had to wait two years. While I waited, I wrote songs about putting on armor and fighting.

This was the second song I finished. Dedicated to House Ironrose and loosely inspired by Duchess Rowan Beatrice von Kampfer, first Queen by Right of Arms.

lyrics

When she was a lass of five years old
With her eyes so bright and her smile so bold
She stood on the edge of the battleground
With her eyes so bright and her smile so bold
And a sudden grin as a dream took hold
And she said, "Someday I'm going to be like them!"
When she was a lass of five years old.

And a fire burned so bright that day
And she said she would fight 'til she got her way
As a warrior maid, as in days of old
With her eyes so bright and her smile so bold

When she was a lass of five and ten
With her heart as wild as the rolling wind
She wept beside the battleground
With her heart as wild as the rolling wind
She sighed and stared and sighed again
For she thought that she could never be like them
When she was a lass of five and ten.

But a fire burned so bright that day
And it dried her tears, and it made her stay
And it told her someday she was going to win
With her heart as wild as the rolling wind

When she was a woman eighteen years old
With her eyes so proud and her heart so bold
When first she fell on the battleground
With her eyes so proud and her heart so bold
And her face so stern as the pain took hold
She held her head up high, a warrior true
When she was a woman eighteen years old

And a fire burned so bright that day
And she swore it would never die away
And she saw her destiny unfold
With her eyes so proud and her heart so bold

When she was a warrior strong and grown
With a blade that flashed and a helm that shone
She stood alone on the battleground
With a blade that flashed and a helm that shone
And the voice of a queen in her powerful tone
As she knew at last that she had won the day
With a blade that flashed and a helm that shone
When she was a warrior strong and grown

For a fire burned so bright that day
And a spirit blazed that could not fade
And she placed herself upon the throne
With a blade that flashed and a helm that shone

And there was lass of five years old
With her eyes so bright and her smile so bold
As she watched from the edge of the battleground
With her eyes so bright and her smile so bold
And a sudden grin as the dream took hold
And she said, "Someday I'm going to be like her!"
When she was a lass of five years old.
